Why Height And Cover Matter To Cats

Cats rest where they feel they cannot be crept up on. A bed that is both covered and raised answers both instincts, which is why a cave with a roof perch gets used while an open cushion on the floor often does not.

Where To Put It

• Somewhere with a view of the room and a clear line to the door, not in a dead-end corner.
• Away from the litter tray, the food bowls and the washing machine.

Good To Know

• Wash the cover on a cool cycle and air dry it. Hot washes and tumble drying shrink the cover and flatten the filling, and a shrunken cover will not go back on.
• Wash bedding every week or two, more often for a dog with allergies or a skin condition. Bedding is where flea eggs and dust mites collect, so it matters more than most people expect.
• Check the hanging toy regularly and cut it off if the cord frays. Cats swallow string far too readily, and string in a cat's gut is a surgical problem.
