What should a rabbit or guinea pig eat?
Hay is the bulk of it and should be available constantly: it wears the teeth down and keeps the gut moving. A measured portion of species-specific pellets and a daily handful of fresh greens complete the diet. Guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C, so their pellets are formulated with it — use them well within the date on the bag, because it degrades over time.
Which bedding should I use?
Paper-based bedding and dust-extracted wood shavings are the two most-used options: paper is more absorbent and kinder to sensitive airways, wood is cheaper by volume. Spot-clean the toilet corner daily and replace the bedding completely each week, and keep the sleeping area separate from where they toilet.
How big should the cage be?
Bigger than the minimum in every case. A rabbit should be able to take three consecutive hops along the length and stand fully upright without its ears touching the roof; guinea pigs need floor area more than height. Daily time outside the cage matters as much as the cage itself.
