Exotic Nutrition is an American brand from Newport News, Virginia that specialises in diets for animals most pet food companies ignore — sugar gliders, hedgehogs, squirrels, chinchillas, prairie dogs, marmosets and the insects you feed to them. Most of the range is made in the USA.
Staple Diets
- Sugar gliders — Glider Complete or the Papaya & Eucalyptus pellet as the dry half, and an Instant-HPW powder as the wet half. Most keepers feed both
- Hedgehogs — Hedgehog Complete, or the Premium Insectivore Diet for a higher-protein stick format
- Squirrels and chipmunks — Squirrel Complete or the Deluxe Squirrel Diet
- Chinchillas — Chinchilla Diet with Rose Hips, fed alongside unlimited grass hay
- Rats, mice and hamsters — Rodent Blocks, which stop a pet picking the bits it likes out of a mix
Supplements
- Glider-Cal — phosphorus-free calcium for gliders fed fruit and insects
- Glider Booster and Hedgehog Booster — vitamins and probiotics
- ZooPro — protein powder for homemade HPW mixes
- Acacia gum and Gummivore-Fare — the tree gum that wild gliders and marmosets feed on
Treats And Enrichment
- Dried and canned insects: mealworms, crickets, grasshoppers, snails, wax worms and black soldier fly larvae
- Hay chews for rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas: Crunchy Swirls, Watermelon Wedges, puff sticks and chew balls
- Dried fruit, nectar pods, honey and agave straws
- Nest pouches, hammocks, foraging toys and the Silent Runner exercise wheel
Good To Know
- Treats should stay under about 10% of the daily diet — the staple food is what keeps an exotic pet well
- Change diets gradually, over a week or two, alongside the food your pet already eats
- Small exotics hide illness well. Weight loss, a change in droppings or refusing food warrants an exotics vet
- A few items in this range are formulated for primates and other species whose keeping is restricted or prohibited in many places — check your local law before ordering
