JBL LED Solar Hanging Kit for Aquarium Lights is a ceiling suspension kit for hanging a JBL LED Solar luminaire above the tank.

Key Features

• Suspends the light instead of resting it on the tank: The luminaire hangs from the ceiling on two steel ropes, which is how an open topped or rimless tank gets lit without a frame or legs sitting across the glass.
• Works with both lights: JBL list it for the LED Solar Natur and the LED Solar Effect, so either can be hung with it.
• Stainless steel rope, adjustable: Two ropes of 150 cm which can be shortened, so the height above the water is set to suit the tank rather than being fixed.
• Fixings in the box: Two dowels, two screws and two ceiling fixtures are included. JBL describe the cable fixture as a push fit, so it mounts in minutes.

Hanging It Properly

• Fix into something solid. The supplied dowels suit masonry. A plasterboard ceiling needs proper hollow wall anchors rated for the weight, and those are not in the box.
• Mark both points off the tank rather than off the ceiling, so the ropes come down square and the light does not hang crooked over the water.
• Height sets intensity. Raising a light drops the amount reaching the substrate quickly, so start near where a resting luminaire would sit and lift it only if the tank is too bright.
• Leave the power cable a drip loop and route it so water cannot run down it to the socket.
• Check the fixings again after a few weeks. Anything hanging over a tank full of water is worth a second look.

How The LED Solar System Fits Together

• LED Solar Natur is the main light. It is the white luminaire that lights the tank and grows the plants, and it is the one part of the range you cannot do without.
• LED Solar Effect is a second, slimmer light that adds RGB colour and weather effects. It runs alongside a Natur rather than instead of one, because on its own it will not light a tank properly or grow plants.
• Control is either the IR remote handset or the Smart Controller, not both. The Smart Controller takes the place of the luminaire's infrared receiver, so fitting one puts the handset out of use.
• The Y-cable runs two luminaires from one supply, and the hanging kit suspends either light from the ceiling instead of resting it on the tank.
• Despite the name, nothing in the range is solar powered. LED Solar is simply what JBL call their aquarium luminaire line, and these are mains powered lights for an indoor tank.

Good To Know

• Hanging the light is what lets you open the tank completely for maintenance and planting, which is the main reason aquascapers do it.
• An open top also means faster evaporation, so expect to top up more often, and a real chance of a jumping fish leaving the tank. Worth thinking about if you keep hatchetfish, killifish or anything else that jumps.
• The ropes are 150 cm each and can be cut shorter but not extended. If your ceiling is higher than that above the tank, ask us before ordering.
• Indoor aquarium use. It is not weatherproof and is not a pond or garden light.
