Description

JBL Cleany is a 160cm double-ended hose brush for the pipework between an external filter and the tank. Hoses silt up on the inside where you cannot see them, and that lost flow is usually blamed on the filter rather than the pipe. JBL gives the range as 12 to 30mm internal diameter and says it suits all its external filters.

Key Features

  • 160cm long: long enough to go the whole length of a filter hose in one pass.
  • A brush at each end: two diameters on one tool, so it covers a range of hose sizes.
  • For 12 to 30mm internal diameter: JBL's figure, which covers the common external-filter hose sizes.
  • Fits JBL external filters: JBL states it suits all of its own external filter hoses.
  • Restores lost flow: a film of silt and biofilm inside a hose narrows it, and a narrower hose means less water through the filter.
  • Flexible enough to follow a bend: hose runs are rarely straight.

Cleaning Filter Hoses

  • Switch the filter off and isolate the hoses before you start, with a bucket and a towel to hand.
  • Push the matching end through from one side and work it along, then repeat from the other end.
  • Rinse the hose through with plain water afterwards, never with detergent.
  • Do the hoses when you service the filter, not instead of it. A clean hose feeding a clogged filter achieves nothing.
  • While the hoses are off, check the inlet strainer and the impeller housing. Those two collect more than people expect.

Good To Know

  • Hoses are worth doing roughly twice a year. The inside of a filter hose is the one part of a system nobody ever looks at.
  • If flow is still down after cleaning the hoses, look at the impeller, the seals and the media before replacing anything.
  • Rinse and dry the brush after use and keep it for the aquarium only.
  • Measure the internal diameter of your hose, not the outside. It is the inside figure that has to match.
  • A kinked or hardened hose will not recover from being brushed. Those need replacing.
