Coollapet makes enrichment for cage birds - foraging toys, chews, perches, swings and mineral blocks for everything from a budgerigar to a macaw. Most of the range is built from the materials a wild bird would work on anyway: coconut shell, bamboo, rattan, palm, loofah and untreated hardwood, with acrylic and plastic used for the parts that need to survive a beak.
Choosing from the range
- Foraging toys make the bird work for its food. The refillable Foot Toy tubes, the Foraging Cup, the Peek-a-Boo Forager and the coconut toys - Drama Queen, Coco Frog, Back-to-Back Play - all hold food the bird has to reach, roll or dig for. This is the single most useful thing you can add to a cage: a bird that forages has less time to scream, pluck or chew the furniture.
- Chew toys keep a beak in condition. The Jimmy Halfa Lobster, Hide Ball, Bamboo Airplane and the two Merry Go Rounds are built to be destroyed, which is the point - a toy that survives untouched is a toy the bird has ignored.
- Preening toys - the Preening Block and Rainbow Sushi - give a bird rope tufts and loose pieces to fuss over instead of its own feathers.
- Perches. The Wacky Wood natural branch and the Wave Calcium Perch both vary in diameter along their length, which is what a bird's foot needs. A cage full of identical dowels is how birds get pressure sores.
- Mineral bells in calcium, and calcium with charcoal, for finches, canaries and budgerigars.
Getting the size right
Bird toys are not one size fits all. Hardware built for a macaw will trap a budgerigar's foot, and a toy built for a budgerigar is reduced to swallowable pieces by a large parrot in minutes. Each Coollapet listing says which birds it is meant for - check that before the colour.
Rotate, do not accumulate
Three toys swapped around every week or two hold a bird's interest far better than eight left hanging permanently. Keep a couple out of the cage and change them over, and check everything in the cage for frayed rope, split wood and chewed clips while you do it.
