Description

The Coollapet Coconut Merry Go Round is a coconut shell hung on a chain with a curtain of dyed wood chips, rings and beads radiating out beneath it.

Key Features

  • Dozens of small chews on one hanger, so a bird is never stuck working the same piece.
  • The pieces swing independently - push one and the whole curtain moves, which is where the name comes from.
  • Coconut shell at the top for the long chew once the soft pieces are gone.
  • Mixed shapes and thicknesses, from thin chips a cockatiel can split to blocks that take a proper beak.
  • Hangs from a chain and clip that fits standard cage bars.

Available in: Coollapet also lists a 24 x 11 cm Merry Go Round, which is a different build on a wooden barrel rather than a coconut shell.

Good To Know

  • Coconut shell is hard. It is a good chew for a bird with a real beak - an amazon, grey, cockatoo or macaw - and more than a budgie or a cockatiel will get through.
  • Chain, quick-links and bells are the usual route to zinc and lead poisoning in parrots. Watch for a bird that strips the coating off metal, and if you ever replace the clip, use stainless steel rather than galvanised hardware from a hardware shop.
  • The colours are dye on wood. Expect them to fade, and to stain a wet beak and the cage tray - that is the dye, not blood.
  • Match the toy to the bird. Hardware built for a macaw will trap a budgie's foot, and a toy built for a budgie is destroyed in minutes by a large parrot, leaving pieces small enough to swallow.
  • A bird that stops playing, sits fluffed on the cage floor or goes quiet is showing the first signs of illness - birds hide sickness until they can no longer manage it. That is an urgent avian vet visit, not a wait-and-see.
