• Buy it by your dog's weight: This is the S box, for dogs of 3.6 to 7.5 kg. As a rough guide that is for small dogs such as a Shih Tzu, Pug or Bichon Frise, but the dose is matched to the weight band, so weigh your dog and go by the number rather than by the breed.

Getting The Size Right

• Weigh your dog rather than guessing. The dose is built around the weight band, and the bands at the small end are narrow: a kilogram either way moves you from one box to the next.
• Buy for the weight your dog is now, not the weight you think it should be. A puppy needs re-weighing every month while it is growing, because it will move up through two or three bands in its first year.
• If your dog sits right on the boundary between two sizes, or is heavier than the largest band, ask your vet which to use. Do not split a tablet or make up a dose from smaller ones unless your vet has told you to.
• Tell us your dog's weight and we will tell you which box you need. It is a thirty second question and it is worth asking.

When And How To Give It

• One chew a month, on the same date each month. Put it in the calendar on your phone, because a month is exactly long enough to forget.
• In the UAE this is a year-round job. There is no winter here that knocks fleas and ticks back, and heartworm is carried by mosquitoes that are active for most of the year.
• Follow the leaflet in the box for whether to give it with food, and keep the leaflet afterwards. It is the only document that is specific to the exact pack you were sent.
• Check that your dog has eaten the whole chew. If it gets dropped and left half finished the dose is not in the dog, and a partial dose is no protection at all.
• Ask your vet about heartworm testing before you start a product that prevents heartworm, particularly if your dog has been off prevention for a while or you have just moved here.

A Veterinary Medicine, Not A Supplement

• This is a licensed veterinary medicine. Depending on where you are it may need a prescription or a vet's sign-off, and we will tell you what we need from you before we send it.
• Tell your vet what else your pet is taking, including anything you bought over the counter. Interactions are their job to rule out, not yours.
• If your pet is pregnant, nursing, very young, very old or being treated for anything else, that is a conversation with a vet before you buy rather than after the first dose.
• Keep a note of the batch number and the date you gave each dose. If you ever need to report a reaction, that is the first thing you will be asked.

Safety

• For dogs only. Never give a dog parasiticide to a cat. Cats handle some of these actives very differently from dogs, and the consequences are serious.
• Store it out of reach of children and pets. It is a flavoured chew, which is the point of it and also the risk: it does not look or taste like medicine to anybody who finds the box.
• Keep an eye on your dog after the first dose of anything new. Vomiting, unsteadiness, tremors or a dog that has simply gone flat means ring the vet rather than wait and see.
• Do not use it on a dog it was not bought for, and do not pass a part-used pack to a friend with a different sized dog.

Good To Know

• The S size is for dogs weighing 3.6 to 7.5 kg. If your dog is outside that, you want a different box and we will help you pick it.
• NexGard give a minimum of 8 weeks of age and 1.35 kg bodyweight for the range. A puppy below that is too small for any size of this product.
• NexGard state that safety has been demonstrated in breeding, pregnant and lactating females. Even so, clear it with your vet before you treat a pregnant or nursing dog.
