Description
Hobby Sea Shells Small & Medium In Glass Jar - 1L is a 1 litre display jar of natural small and medium snail shells. They are sold as decor, and they have a second use that is worth knowing about: hermit crabs need a steady supply of larger empty shells to move into as they grow, and a crab with no spare shell is a crab in trouble.

If You Keep Hermit Crabs
- Offer several sizes at once, a little larger and a little smaller than the shell your crab is wearing. Crabs are particular and will reject most of what you give them.
- Rinse in warm water, no detergent. Dechlorinated water if you have it. Do not boil or bleach them.
- Check the opening. A shell with a chipped or narrowed opening will not be used, however pretty it is.
Good To Know
- This listing is the small and medium grade in a 1 litre jar. The other grade is a separate listing.
- Natural shells are calcium carbonate, so in soft, acidic freshwater they will slowly dissolve and nudge hardness and pH upward. In a marine or hard-water tank that is irrelevant; in a soft-water shrimp or betta tank, leave them out.
- Rinse before use and check for sharp broken edges.
- Shell sizes and shapes vary between jars - it is a natural product, not a moulded one.
