Hobby Aqualon Aquarium Filter Wool is the cheapest and most useful thing in any filter. It sits in the flow before everything else and catches the coarse dirt, which keeps that dirt out of your biological media. Replacing it is the single easiest maintenance win there is.

• Four Sizes: 100g, 250g, 500g and 1000g. The 1000g roll is far better value if you have more than one tank.
• Cut To Fit: it is a loose mat, so you tear or cut it to whatever your filter basket needs.
• Also Grows Bacteria: a mature pad does host bacteria, which is exactly why you should not change all of it at once.

How To Use It Properly

• Replace it, do not wash it. This is the one filter medium that is meant to be thrown away. Washing wool compresses the fibres and it never flows the same again.
• But not all of it at once. If it is the only medium in your filter, change half at a time so you keep some bacteria.
• Before the sponge and the ceramics, on the inlet side. Wool last is wool doing nothing.
• Do not pack it tight. Stuffed wool chokes the flow and the filter bypasses it. It wants to be springy.

Good To Know

• Pick the weight above.
• Check it weekly. A grey, matted pad is doing less than you think.
• It does not polish water on its own - for crystal clarity you need finer media or a UV clarifier after it.
• Keep the roll dry and sealed. Damp wool in a cupboard here will mildew.
