Why A Salon Needs One

Every tool that touches a dog can carry something to the next one. Ringworm, bacterial skin infections, mites and yeast all travel on combs, scissors and blades, and ringworm passes to people as well. UV is a clean way to handle it between appointments because there is no residue and nothing for a tool to corrode in.

Clean First, Then Sterilise

This matters, and it is the step people skip. UV light only works on what it can reach, so hair, grease and skin debris shield everything underneath. Brush and wash the tool, dry it, and then put it in the cabinet. A blade packed with hair comes out of a UV cabinet exactly as contaminated as it went in.

Who Makes It

Groom Professional launched in 2009 on the Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland and is sold through the grooming trade supplier Christies Direct. The range was built for working salons rather than for the bathroom cupboard, which is why so much of it comes as a concentrate and in four-litre sizes. Groom Professional say the products are manufactured in the UK.

Good To Know

• Never look directly at a lit UV lamp, and do not run it with the door open. UV-C light damages eyes and skin.
• Keep pets and children away from it while it is running.
• Clean and dry tools before they go in. UV cannot reach through hair or grease.
• Oil clipper blades after sterilising, not before.
• Replace the lamp when the manufacturer says to -- a UV tube keeps glowing long after it has stopped being effective.
