Description

The Groom Professional Clipper Oil is the cheapest thing you can do to keep a set of clipper blades working -- a few drops along the teeth before and during every groom.

Key Features

  • Lubricates the blade: Cuts the friction that makes a blade heat up and drag
  • All blade types: Suits snap-on A5 blades and fixed heads alike
  • Keeps blades cool: A dry blade gets hot fast, and a hot blade burns skin
  • Quieter running: A well-oiled blade is noticeably less noisy, which matters to a nervous dog
  • Longer blade life: Blades are expensive; oil is not
  • Size: 200ml

How And When To Oil

  • A line of drops along the blade teeth before you start, run the clipper for a few seconds, then wipe the excess off.
  • Re-oil every ten minutes or so on a long groom, and more often on a thick coat.
  • Wipe the excess away or it picks up hair and turns into a paste.
  • Oil again before you put the blade away, so it does not sit and corrode.

Blade Heat Burns Dogs

This is why oiling matters rather than being a nice-to-do. A clipper blade can reach a temperature that burns skin within minutes of running dry, and the areas most often affected are exactly the thin-skinned ones -- the belly, the armpits, the groin and around the tail. Touch the blade to the back of your own hand regularly: if it is too hot for you, it is far too hot for the dog. Keeping a spare blade so you can swap and let one cool is standard salon practice.

Who Makes It

Groom Professional launched in 2009 on the Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland and is sold through the grooming trade supplier Christies Direct. The range was built for working salons rather than for the bathroom cupboard, which is why so much of it comes as a concentrate and in four-litre sizes. Groom Professional say the products are manufactured in the UK.

Good To Know

  • Oil the blade, not the clipper body or the motor vents.
  • Keep it off the dog's skin and coat -- it is a machine oil, not a grooming product.
  • A blade that still drags after oiling is blunt and needs sharpening or replacing. Pulling hair hurts, and it is how a dog learns to hate the clippers.
  • Keep it out of the eyes and mouth. Rinse with clean water if any gets in.
  • Keep it out of reach of children and store it somewhere cool and dry.
