The difference is scale, and it is substantial:

The higher pressure produces a finer mist, which matters because fine droplets hang in the air and raise humidity, while coarse ones fall straight to the floor and soak the substrate. The 8 litre reservoir runs for days unattended.

Why Automate Misting

Hand misting happens when you are home. A rainforest species needs humidity maintained through the day and overnight, and a spray bottle twice a day produces a sawtooth — briefly saturated, then drying out for hours. Those swings cause poor shedding, dehydration and respiratory illness. Short, frequent automated bursts hold conditions far closer to constant.

Regular misting also stimulates breeding behaviour in many species, which respond to the onset of a rainy season.

Also Good For Plants

The fine mist suits tropical plants that absorb moisture through their leaves — bromeliads, orchids, tillandsias and mosses all do markedly better under it. Also suitable for greenhouse use.

Setting It Up

• Start with short, frequent bursts and check humidity with a hygrometer over a full day before settling on a schedule.
• Aim nozzles at foliage and decor, not directly at the animal or into a basking area.
• Use dechlorinated or filtered water. Tap water leaves deposits that clog nozzles, and chlorine is harmful to amphibians.
• When running several enclosures from one unit, remember they may need different humidity levels — check each one rather than assuming a single schedule suits all.
• Make sure enclosures dry out between mistings.
