Healthy Bites is the treat range from VetIQ, the pet healthcare brand of Mark & Chappell Ltd in the UK. Every bite in the range is built the same way: a crisp baked cereal shell wrapped around a soft cream-filled centre, with the active ingredients carried in the filling. That format is the whole point of the range, because it turns something you would normally have to squeeze out of a tube or hide in food into a treat your pet actually asks for, and one you can count out exactly.
Which Bag For Which Job
- Growth Support, for kittens: Calcium from chia and alfalfa, with chicken and turkey protein. For kittens from 8 weeks through to about a year, and the bag to use as a reward while you are socialising and handling a new kitten.
- Nutri Booster, for kittens and cats: The all-rounder. Taurine, zinc, copper and added vitamins with salmon protein, and the only kitten bag that is wheat-free. The easiest one to use as an everyday treat.
- Hairball Remedy, for cats and kittens: Carries the same actives as a traditional hairball paste, malt extract and petrolatum with prebiotic inulin. The one to reach for if your cat fights you over a tube.
- Urinary Care, for cats and kittens: Cranberry, DL-methionine, taurine and L-carnitine. Read the product page before you buy this one; there is an important caveat below.
- Immunity Care, for small animals: Echinacea, vitamin C, apple powder and inulin. The vitamin C is of real interest to guinea pig owners in particular.
- Odour Care, for small animals: Yucca schidigera and brewer's yeast, aimed at cage odour. We have been honest on the product page about how much of that job a treat can actually do.
- Nutri Care, for small animals: The all-rounder for small pets. Omega 3 and 6 with added vitamins and minerals, for general condition and coat.
What Is Good About The Range
- Mark & Chappell state there are no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives anywhere in the range, using vitamin E, vitamin C derivatives and rosemary extract instead.
- The three small animal recipes contain no ingredients of animal origin and no added free sugars. That is the right shape for a strict herbivore, and it is more than most rabbit and guinea pig treats manage, because the usual trick is a yoghurt or honey coating.
- Because they are individual countable bites rather than a paste or a powder, you always know how much your pet has actually had. For anything you are giving on purpose, that matters.
Being Straight About What They Are
- These are complementary pet foods, not veterinary medicines. Nothing in the range is licensed to diagnose, treat or prevent a disease, and the VetIQ name on the bag does not change that.
- Think of them as good treats with a sensible extra in them, picked to suit a particular situation. That is a fair reason to choose one bag over another. It is not a reason to use one instead of seeing a vet.
- The most important example is the Urinary Care bag. A cat straining in the litter tray, going repeatedly, producing only drops, crying, or passing blood needs a vet immediately, and in a male cat a urinary blockage can be fatal within a day or two. No treat will help, and the delay is what does the harm.
- The same principle applies to the small animal bags. A rabbit or guinea pig that stops eating or stops passing droppings is an emergency the same day, not something an immunity treat will carry through the night.
How To Use Them Well
- Keep everything outside the main meals under about a tenth of the day's calories. On a kitten or a hamster that allowance is genuinely tiny, and the published feeding guides are better read as ceilings than as targets.
- For rabbits and guinea pigs, unlimited grass hay comes first and always will. These are cereal-based bites, so one or two at a time rather than a daily habit, and nothing here does the job that long-fibre chewing does for teeth.
- Small animals should be supervised while they eat these, with fresh water always available. Hand-feed rather than scattering them in the bedding, or hide one in a cardboard tube and let your pet work for it.
- In the UAE, storage matters. Use the pack within four weeks of opening, press the resealable strip shut properly, and keep it in a cupboard rather than on a sunny shelf. Heat turns the oils in a cream filling stale faster here than the packaging assumes.
