Description

JBL Fish Transport Bags Small - 50 Pack is a pack of fifty small polythene bags for carrying fish home from the shop or moving them between tanks.

Key Features

  • Double sealed seams: The seam is what fails on a cheap bag, and a bag that splits in a car footwell is a dead fish. These are sealed twice down each side.
  • Rounded, heat sealed corners: A fish cannot wedge itself into a sharp corner and damage its fins or barbels, which is exactly what happens to catfish and long finned fish in a square cornered bag.
  • Clear only at the base: The upper part of the bag is opaque, so the fish travels in shade and settles rather than panicking at movement outside, while you can still see it when the bag stands upright.
  • Fifty to a pack: Enough for a breeder, a club sale or a shop counter, and unused bags keep indefinitely in a drawer.

Bagging A Fish Properly

  • Roughly one third water and two thirds air. The air space is the oxygen supply, and a bag filled to the top with water will suffocate the fish.
  • One fish to a bag for anything spiny, territorial or large. Fish that are fine together in a tank will fight in a bag.
  • Double bag anything with spines or sharp fin rays. Catfish, cichlids and most marine fish will go straight through a single bag.
  • Twist the top, fold it over and band it, so there is no corner left for a small fish to force itself into.
  • Keep the bag dark, level and warm in transit. A closed box or a cool bag, not rolling loose in a footwell.
  • Journey time matters more than anything else here. Under an hour is routine, but beyond a few hours a fish needs pure oxygen in the bag and more water volume than this.

Getting The Fish Into The Tank

  • Float the sealed bag in the tank for fifteen to twenty minutes so the temperatures match.
  • Then open it and add tank water gradually over twenty to thirty minutes, or drip it in, so the fish adjusts to the change in pH and hardness rather than being dropped into it.
  • Net the fish across into the tank and pour the bag water away. It carries the shop's water chemistry, the fish's own waste from the journey and anything it was carrying.
  • Leave the lights off for the rest of the day and do not feed until the following morning.

Good To Know

  • These are the small size, suited to small community fish. Ask us for the exact bag dimensions if you are moving anything larger.
  • A heat sealed bag is a single use item. It is not worth risking a fish in a bag that has already been opened and retaped.
  • Polythene bags are a suffocation risk. Keep the pack away from children.
