Open Tray Or Hooded Box?

• An open tray is easier for a cat to use and easier for you to check, since you see the contents without lifting a lid.
• The trade-off is that nothing holds the smell back between scoops, so an open tray wants clearing out at least once a day.
• A determined digger will throw litter over a 14.5cm side. A mat in front of the tray catches most of what gets kicked out and what sticks to paws.

• The usual guidance is one tray per cat plus one spare, placed apart from each other and away from food and water bowls.
• Litter is heavy. Check the 50cm footprint against the spot you have in mind before ordering, particularly in a bathroom or a utility cupboard.
• Wash it with hot water and a mild detergent. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners, which smell like urine to a cat and can put it off the tray altogether.
• Replace the tray once the plastic is badly scratched. Scratches hold smell no matter how well you wash them.
