Description

Howbone Goat's Milk Formulated Powder for Dogs - 300g is a 300g tin of goat's-milk powder that you mix with water and serve alongside normal food. Howbone sells it as a complementary feed with added vitamins and minerals, aimed at fussy eaters, dogs recovering from illness and dogs with a sensitive gut. The notes below cover what a complementary feed is and is not.

Key Features

  • Goat's milk base: a milder dairy than cow's milk, which is why it is used for dogs that do not handle ordinary milk.
  • Added vitamins and minerals: Howbone fortifies the powder and lists digestive and immune support as the aim.
  • Mixes to order: powder keeps far longer than liquid milk and lets you make up only what you need.
  • Palatable: useful for tempting a dog that has gone off its food during a recovery, by pouring a little over the meal.
  • 300g tin: a resealable tin rather than a pouch, which keeps powder dry once opened.

What A Complementary Feed Means

  • A complementary feed is designed to go alongside a complete food, not to replace it. On its own it is not a balanced diet for any dog.
  • Goat's milk is not the same as a mother dog's milk, which is considerably richer in protein and fat. Do not use this as the only food for an orphaned newborn litter.
  • Hand-rearing a litter needs a proper puppy milk replacer and a vet's guidance on amounts and feeding intervals. Get that advice before you start.
  • For a dog recovering from illness or surgery, check with your vet before adding anything to the diet they have set.

Good To Know

  • Mix it with clean water as directed on the tin and throw away what your dog does not drink. Made-up milk spoils quickly at room temperature.
  • Not every dog handles milk well. Start with a small amount and stop if you see loose stools or wind.
  • Milk carries calories of its own. Count what you pour into the daily total and take a little off the main meal, or a fussy dog ends up fuller and fussier.
  • Keep the tin closed and dry; damp powder clumps and spoils.
  • A dog that stays off its food, keeps vomiting or has diarrhoea for more than a day needs a vet, not a change of milk.
