Bathing A Puppy

• Wait until a puppy is properly settled in and has had its vaccinations before the first real bath. There is rarely any hurry.
• Lukewarm water, never hot. Puppies lose heat fast, so dry them properly and keep them somewhere warm afterwards.
• Keep it short and make it pleasant. The first few baths set how a dog feels about being washed for the rest of its life.
• Rinse thoroughly, towel off, and brush the coat as it dries so the puppy learns to stand for grooming.

How Often

Less than you would think. A healthy puppy needs a bath when it is actually dirty, not on a schedule -- washing a young coat repeatedly strips its oils and leaves the skin dry and itchy. Between baths, a damp cloth deals with most of what a puppy rolls in.
