The Greenfields Dog Detangler Spray is a leave-in conditioning spray for long-haired and curly dogs, softening the coat so a comb can get through a tangle instead of pulling the dog about.

How To Use It

• Spray onto a dry coat, or onto a clean damp coat after a bath.
• Massage it in and leave it about a minute.
• Comb the coat out. No rinsing needed.
• Work on one section at a time, holding the hair at the root so the comb pulls against your hand instead of the skin.

Brushing Beats Detangling

A detangler loosens knots that already exist. It does not stop them forming. Long and curly coats need a comb through the whole coat two or three times a week, right down to the skin -- brushing only the top leaves a felted layer underneath that looks fine until the groomer finds it.

Greenfields is part of Orange Pet Brands, based in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. They say they have more than twenty years in pet care and that their shampoos are produced in the Netherlands, paraben-free, biodegradable and pH balanced.

• A solid mat tight against the skin needs clipping out by a groomer. Do not attack it with scissors -- skin pulls up into a mat and cuts far more easily than you would think.
• This is a dog product. Do not use it on a cat -- it contains essential oils and fragrance, and several oils that are harmless to dogs are not safe for cats.
• Keep it out of the eyes and ears. Rinse with clean water if any gets in.
• Greenfields describe the perfume as free from allergens. That refers to the declarable fragrance allergens, not a guarantee that no animal will ever react -- stop using it if the skin goes red or itchy.
• A shampoo cleans; it does not treat disease. Broken, scabby or weeping skin, a smell that comes back within days of a bath, bald patches or scratching to the point of bleeding all need a vet rather than a different bottle.
• Read the label before use and keep it out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dark place.
