Washing A Curly Coat

• Brush and comb right down to the skin before the dog gets wet. A curly coat mats at the roots where you cannot see it, and water tightens those mats into felt.
• Soak the coat properly. Curl repels water at first and the middle of a thick coat can still be dry when the outside looks drenched.
• Squeeze the shampoo through rather than rubbing in circles -- circular scrubbing is what tangles curl.
• Rinse for a long time, then blow the coat dry while brushing it out. A curly coat left to dry on its own shrinks back into mats.

How Often To Wash

Most dogs do not need a bath more than once every four to six weeks, and many need less. Washing too often strips the oils that keep a coat waterproof and the skin comfortable, which can leave a dog itchier than it started. Brushing between baths does more for a coat than shampoo does.

Why Curly Coats Need Clipping

A curly coat does not shed the way a straight one does. The dead hair stays in the coat instead of dropping out, which is why these breeds mat and why they need clipping every six to ten weeks on top of brushing at home. Shampoo helps; it is not a substitute for the groomer.
