Description
The Greenfields Dog Aloe Vera Shampoo is a mild shampoo built around aloe vera and citronella extracts, aimed at the dog whose coat has gone dry and dull and whose skin is tight and flaky rather than infected.
Key Features
- Aloe vera: Greenfields blend it with essential and natural oils to soothe the feel of dry, irritated skin
- Citronella: Included as a natural extract in the formula and the source of its scent
- For dry coats: Aimed at restoring a coat that has gone dry and brittle
- All coat types: Suitable for any coat, short or long
- Clean formula: Paraben-free and pH balanced, with a perfume Greenfields describe as allergen-free
- Size: 200ml bottle
How To Bath A Dog
- Brush the coat out before it gets wet. Water turns a loose tangle into a solid mat.
- Wet the coat right through with lukewarm water -- not hot. A thick double coat takes longer to soak than it looks.
- Work the shampoo in from the neck down, so suds run away from the face.
- Rinse for longer than you think you need to. Shampoo left in the coat is the usual cause of itching after a bath.
- Towel off, then comb the coat while it is still damp and brush again once it is dry.
How Often To Wash
Most dogs do not need a bath more than once every four to six weeks, and many need less. Washing too often strips the oils that keep a coat waterproof and the skin comfortable, which can leave a dog itchier than it started. Brushing between baths does more for a coat than shampoo does.
What It Will Not Do
Dry skin has a cause -- too many baths, dry air, poor coat condition, parasites, allergy or something hormonal. A soothing shampoo makes a dog more comfortable for a few days at a time. It does not treat any of those, and a dog that itches constantly needs the cause found rather than another wash.
Who Makes It
Greenfields is part of Orange Pet Brands, based in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. They say they have more than twenty years in pet care and that their shampoos are produced in the Netherlands, paraben-free, biodegradable and pH balanced.
Good To Know
- This one is out of stock at the moment, so the page is here for reference while we wait on the next delivery.
- Citronella is an insect-repellent oil, but this is a shampoo and not an insect repellent -- do not rely on it to keep anything off your dog.
- Greenfields' published composition for this product includes 2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one, a preservative that can cause a skin reaction in sensitive people and animals. Wash your hands after use and keep pets off a treated surface until it is dry.
- This is a dog product. Do not use it on a cat -- it contains essential oils and fragrance, and several oils that are harmless to dogs are not safe for cats.
- Keep it out of the eyes and ears. Rinse with clean water if any gets in.
- Greenfields describe the perfume as free from allergens. That refers to the declarable fragrance allergens, not a guarantee that no animal will ever react -- stop using it if the skin goes red or itchy.
- A shampoo cleans; it does not treat disease. Broken, scabby or weeping skin, a smell that comes back within days of a bath, bald patches or scratching to the point of bleeding all need a vet rather than a different bottle.
- Read the label before use and keep it out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dark place.
