Choosing A Guide Length

• 10mm is the safe starting point. You can always take more off; you cannot put it back
• 6mm is a typical summer tidy for most pet coats
• 3mm is short, and on a thin-coated or pale dog it leaves skin close to exposed
• The bare 1.0mm blade with no guide is very short indeed. Treat it as a tool for paw pads and sanitary trims, not for a body clip

Clipping At Home Without Regretting It

• Only ever clip a clean, dry, fully brushed-out coat. Clipping a dirty or matted coat blunts the blade and catches skin
• Go with the lie of the coat, in short passes, letting the clipper travel rather than pushing it
• Check the blade temperature against the inside of your wrist every minute or two. Even a non-heating blade gets warm with a dense coat, and a hot blade burns before a dog reacts
• Keep the skin flat and taut. Loose skin - armpits, flanks, around the sanitary area - is where almost every clipper injury happens
• Oil the blade before and after each session, and brush the hair out of it

When Not To Do It Yourself

• A matted coat. A groomer can clip it out safely; doing it blind at home catches skin trapped inside the mat
• A double-coated breed you intend to keep double-coated - Huskies, German Shepherds, Border Collies. Clipping a double coat can permanently change how it regrows, and it does not help with heat
• Anywhere near the face, eyes or inside the ears
• A dog that is frightened of the noise. Build it up over days with the clipper switched on at a distance before it ever touches them
