Hardware Mounted Is The Stronger Option

• Screwing a gate to the frame holds far better than pressure, which is why it is the only type that should ever go at the top of stairs
• It does mean screw holes. On a rented wall, that is the trade-off
• Fix into the stud or the solid frame, not into plasterboard alone

A Note On Accordion Gates

• Older accordion gates with large V-shaped or diamond openings were withdrawn in several countries after children were caught in them. Keep any accordion gate away from toddlers and check the opening sizes yourself
• The same applies to a small dog or a cat that might get a head through a gap and not back out

Where A Gate Should And Should Not Go

• Never use a pressure-mounted gate at the top of a staircase. Pressure gates can be pushed out of the frame, and a gate that gives way at the top of stairs is worse than no gate at all. Hardware-mounted gates are the only safe choice there
• This is a pet gate, not a certified child safety gate. If a toddler uses the same doorway, buy a gate tested to the child standard instead
• Check the gate from your dog's side. A determined climber or a dog that can get its nose under the bottom rail will treat any gate as a puzzle rather than a barrier
