How Often And How Much

• If you can hear the nails clicking on tile, they are too long. Overgrown nails change how a dog stands and put strain through the toes and wrists
• Take a little off at a time. The quick - the pink vein inside the nail - follows the nail down, so a long-overdue nail has a long quick and cannot be shortened in one go
• On black nails you cannot see the quick. Take thin slices and stop when the cut face shows a small grey or pink dot in the centre
• Keep styptic powder or cornflour in the grooming kit. If you do catch the quick it bleeds a lot, and pressure plus powder stops it

About The Safety Stop

• It sets how much nail passes through the hole, which helps if you are nervous. It cannot know where your dog's quick is, so it is a guide rather than a guarantee
• Set it conservatively and take two passes rather than one
• Guillotine clippers are designed for the nail to go in from the underside, with the blade cutting upwards. Going in the other way crushes the nail

• Hold the foot loosely. Gripping tight makes a dog pull away harder
