Giving A Tablet Properly

• Tip the head gently back until the nose points at the ceiling. The jaw relaxes on its own in that position
• Place the tablet as far back over the tongue as you can reach, then close the mouth and stroke the throat until they swallow
• Follow immediately with a few millilitres of water or a lick of food. A tablet that sits in the oesophagus can cause real damage, particularly in cats and particularly with doxycycline
• Watch for the sly spit-out thirty seconds later

Easier Alternatives Worth Trying First

• Most tablets go down in a piece of cheese, a bit of wet food or a purpose-made pill treat without any struggle at all
• Ask your vet before crushing or splitting anything. Some tablets are coated for a reason and some are dangerous to handle crushed
• If giving medication is becoming a battle, say so at the next appointment. There is often a liquid, a chew or a long-acting injection instead
