FARMA Moulting Pigeon Diet - 20kg

The FARMA Moulting Pigeon Diet is a twenty-three variety mix for the moult — the few months each year when a pigeon regrows its entire plumage and needs more protein and oil than at any time outside breeding.

• Twenty-three varieties: buckwheat, canary seed, barley, wheat, popcorn, yellow and red millet, peeled oats, paddy rice, rice, red and white sorghum, rapeseed, safflower, black and striped sunflower, linseed, soya, mung beans, yellow, green and maple peas, and vetches
• The oil seeds — linseed, safflower, sunflower and rapeseed — carry the fats that feather condition depends on
• Legumes supply the protein, and a feather is very nearly pure protein

Feeding

• Start the moult mix as birds begin to drop flights, usually once the racing season ends, and keep it going until the new feather has hardened
• Do not cut rations during the moult. A bird short of protein now carries poor feather for a year
• Offer grit and a mineral or calcium source separately; no seed mix supplies enough calcium on its own

Good To Know

• The moult is the most demanding thing a pigeon does apart from breeding. It is not the moment to restrict feed or push training
• Fault bars across new feathers usually reflect a check during growth — a stressful week, a feed change or an illness
• The high oil-seed content means this mix goes rancid faster than a plain grain ration. Keep it sealed and cool
• Birds in moult are quieter and fly less well. That is normal, not illness
