FARMA Finch Food - 20kg

The FARMA Finch Food is a seed diet for finches of every kind, from zebra and gouldian finches to canaries, sold in 20 kg sacks in a choice of two recipes.

Key Features

• Two recipes at 20 kg: the economical Budget Mix, or the standard Mix, a thirteen-seed blend
• The thirteen-seed Mix contains rapeseed, wheat, yellow, white and red millet, striped sunflower, peeled oats, safflower, linseed, buckwheat, yellow panicum, canary seed and niger seed
• Canary seed and the millets form the base, with niger and linseed adding the oil-rich seed most finches go for first
• The seed sizes span what small and medium finches can handle, so it suits a mixed aviary

Feeding

• Roughly a level teaspoon to a tablespoon per finch per day depending on the species; measure it rather than free-pouring
• Tip the husks off the top of the bowl every day — a bowl that looks full is usually nothing but empty shells
• Add fresh greens, egg food during breeding, cuttlebone and grit — a seed mix alone is not a complete diet
• Clean, fresh water at all times, changed at least daily in hot weather

Good To Know

• A 20 kg sack is aviary and breeder quantity. For one or two birds, buy the retail bag instead — seed goes stale and oily seed goes rancid
• Niger and linseed are oily and go rancid quickly. Buy a size you will get through in a couple of months and keep it sealed
• If you see birds eating only the sunflower and leaving the rest, switch to measured portions rather than a topped-up bowl
• Check the sack for weevils and pantry moth in warm weather, and use it within a couple of months
• Birds hide illness until very late. One sitting fluffed up on the floor of the cage is an emergency, not an off day
