• Despite how it has been described, this is a play stand rather than a cage stand, and it is not a home. It has no walls - a bird on it is loose in the room.
• Bird-proof the room first: windows and mirrors covered, ceiling fans off, other pets shut out, and no open water.
• A bird that will not step up reliably should not be left on an open stand. Train the step-up first.
• Height matters with parrots. A stand that puts the bird permanently above your head makes some birds harder to handle, so set the perch around chest height to start.
• Lock the castors before the bird goes on. A stand that rolls underfoot will put a bird off using it again.
• Keep birds well away from the kitchen. Overheated non-stick cookware gives off fumes that kill birds within minutes, and it is one of the commonest causes of sudden death in a pet parrot in an ordinary home.
• A bird that stops playing, sits fluffed or goes quiet needs an avian vet the same day. Birds hide illness until they no longer can, so by the time it shows it is usually well advanced.
