Description

The Camon Nail Clippers for Dogs - Large is a large plier-style nail clipper for dogs, with stainless steel blades, a safety guard, a locking catch and enough leverage for a thick nail.

Key Features

  • Long handles for leverage, which is what a thick nail on a large breed needs — a small clipper will crush rather than cut
  • Polished stainless steel blades
  • Safety guard that limits how far the blades close
  • Locking catch for storage, and anti-slip grips on both handles
  • The large size in the Camon range, for medium and large dogs
  • Made by Camon, an Italian pet accessory manufacturer

How To Trim Nails Safely

  • Take small slivers off the tip rather than one decisive cut. On dark nails the quick cannot be seen, so you go a little at a time and look at the cut end after each pass
  • Stop when a pale oval appears in the centre of the cut surface. That is the quick approaching, and the next cut would draw blood
  • Do not forget the dewclaws on the inside of the front legs. They touch nothing, so they keep growing and can curl into the pad
  • Keep styptic powder or a bar of soap to hand. Pressing a bleeding nail into soap will stop it
  • If the nails are already long, take a little off weekly. The quick recedes over several weeks and cannot be rushed
  • Handle the paws for a few days first, with a treat each time, before the clippers come out at all

Good To Know

  • Catching the quick hurts and bleeds, and an animal remembers it. Going slowly is not caution, it is how you keep it co-operating next month
  • Nails that click on a hard floor are already too long. Ideally they should not touch the ground when the animal is standing still
  • Blunt clippers crush the nail instead of cutting it, which is what makes animals flinch. Replace them once they start to squash rather than slice
  • If an animal will not let you near its feet, a vet or groomer can do it in a couple of minutes. It is not worth a fight that sets you back months
  • Thick nails are easier to cut just after a bath, when the nail has softened slightly
  • If a nail is too thick for the clippers to cut cleanly, a grinder is the better tool and less likely to split the nail
