Description

The Camon Claw Scissors for Cats & Small Pets is a pair of scissor-style claw trimmers for cats, rabbits and other small animals, with short curved blades notched to cradle the claw as it is cut.

Key Features

  • Scissor action rather than plier action, which many people find easier to aim on a small, thin claw
  • Curved, notched blades that hold the claw in place instead of letting it slide out as the blades close
  • Stainless steel blades on moulded ring handles
  • Short blades for control, sized for cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and other small pets rather than for dogs
  • Made by Camon, an Italian pet accessory manufacturer

How To Trim Nails Safely

  • Take small slivers off the tip rather than one decisive cut. On dark nails the quick cannot be seen, so you go a little at a time and look at the cut end after each pass
  • Stop when a pale oval appears in the centre of the cut surface. That is the quick approaching, and the next cut would draw blood
  • Do not forget the dewclaws on the inside of the front legs. They touch nothing, so they keep growing and can curl into the pad
  • Keep styptic powder or a bar of soap to hand. Pressing a bleeding nail into soap will stop it
  • If the nails are already long, take a little off weekly. The quick recedes over several weeks and cannot be rushed
  • Handle the paws for a few days first, with a treat each time, before the clippers come out at all

Good To Know

  • Catching the quick hurts and bleeds, and an animal remembers it. Going slowly is not caution, it is how you keep it co-operating next month
  • Nails that click on a hard floor are already too long. Ideally they should not touch the ground when the animal is standing still
  • Blunt clippers crush the nail instead of cutting it, which is what makes animals flinch. Replace them once they start to squash rather than slice
  • If an animal will not let you near its feet, a vet or groomer can do it in a couple of minutes. It is not worth a fight that sets you back months
  • Cat claws are usually pale enough to see the pink quick through. Cut in front of it, at the clear hook of the claw, and only the tip comes off
  • Press the toe pad gently to push the claw out before cutting. A cat's claws retract, so you are working blind otherwise
  • One claw at a time over several sittings is a perfectly good approach with a cat that objects
  • The listing previously described this as a personal grooming tool for human nails. It is a claw trimmer for animals and has been corrected
